Seven of our eighth-graders attended the Life, Powered By You conference at the Corning Radisson recently. They were nominated by their counselor and teachers for the conference sponsored by the Career Development Council. They attended workshops run by women in business with topics such as empowerment, finances, branding, and relationships. Many girls from schools across the region attended.
Thank you for attending the conference and representing our school so well, students!

SHS Junior, Sophia Hyatt, and her teacher, Ms. Ameigh, have been accepted into the Normandy Institute through George Washington University in Washington, DC. This highly selective program accepts only 15 student-teacher teams from across the country. As part of the Institute, Sophia and Ms. Ameigh will complete a 6-month non-degree course through GWU to build their knowledge and understanding of D-Day, the Battle of Normandy, and World War II. In June, the pair will spend several days in Washington, DC before flying to Normandy, France to visit important cultural and military sites associated with D-Day. The highlight of the institute is that Sophia and Ms. Ameigh will research a local soldier who was killed during the D-Day invasion and is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery St-Laurent/Mer Omaha Beach France. They will write a biography of this soldier, which will be included in the archives of the American Battle Monuments Commission. In addition, Sophia will stand next to the grave of our soldier and deliver his biography. Both are so excited for this amazing opportunity!
